Aethelred II (978-1016), silver Penny, c. 991, Exeter mint, moneyer Byrhsige, Second Hand type. Obv. Diademed bust facing right holding sceptre. Rev. Hand of Providence issuing from clouds, dividing alpha and omega across fields. 1.30g, die axis 9h (S.1146; North 768). Possibly once lightly wiped, the recesses since re-toned to a pleasant light golden brown colour, a nice collectable example of this type. A bold very fine and a rare mint/moneyer combination for this type.
