Aethelred II (978-1016), silver Penny, Sudbury or Southwark mint, moneyer Byrhtelm, Crux type, BMC IIIa. Obv. Bare-headed bust facing left, holding sceptre, ÆÐELR’ED REX ANGLOX+ (the N and G ligate). Rev. Voided short cross, pellet at centre, CRVX in angles, BYRHTEL M-O SVÐ+. 1.11g, die axis 12h (S.1148; North 770). Some flan stress behind kings head and a very light wave to flan, the reverse with a few pecks marks otherwise evenly struck and with a pleasing old cabinet tone. Good very fine and the moneyer rare.
