Aethelred II (978-1016), silver Penny, 997-1003, Canterbury mint, moneyer Edwold, Long Cross type, BMC IVa. Obv. Draped bust facing left, legends reads +ÆÐELRED REX ΛNGLO, interestingly, with a ‘wedge’ between R and E in ÆÐELRED Rev. Voided long cross, pellet and centre, each arm terminating in three crescents, legend reads +EΛDPOLD M-O CÆNT. 1.49g, die axis 1h (S.1151; North 774). Slight crimp to flan, some weakness of strike and a few peck marks, otherwise of bright, sound metal, centrally struck with most outer beading visible, a collectable piece. Very fine.
