Charles I (1625-1649), silver Groat, 1638-1642, Aberystwyth mint, provincial issues and coinages of the English Civil War (1642-1649), m.m. Book/Book. Obv. Crowned large bust facing left wearing dress with lace collar, no armour on shoulder, plumelet before, IIII as mark of value behind. Rev. Oval garnished shield of arms, plume above. 1.90g, die axis 5h (S.2891; North 2337; Brooker 762-3 (same dies)). A couple of trivial marks, otherwise well struck on a round flan, beautiful steely florescent grey tone – slightly darker in the legends serving to accentuate the pleasing portrait, a handsome coin with much eye appeal. Almost extremely fine.
