Edward III (1327-1377), silver Groat, 1369-1377, London mint, fourth coinage, post-treaty period (1369-1377), ‘Chain mail’, m.m. Cross Pattée & 4 Pellets/Cross Pattée. Obv. Crowned bust facing within tressure, row of annulets along bust in imitation of chain mail, fleurs on all cusps, FRANC’ D HIB. Rev. Long forked cross to edge of coin, 3 pellets in each central quarter within inner beaded circle, saltire before CIVI and LON. 4.63g, die axis 11h (S.1639 (this coin); North 1284). A small mark to the bust and in second and fourth quarters of reverse, nonetheless a particularly well struck example with a deep tone, the bust pleasing and the annulets well defined, certainly one of the finer examples available to commerce for this very rare issue. Good very fine and very rare.
