Edward VI (1547-1553), gold Half-Sovereign, 1547-1549, Southwark mint, first period (Apr. 1547-Jan. 1549), E below shield, m.m. E over arrow/E. Obv. King enthroned facing, holding orb and sceptre. Rev. Crowned shield of arms supported by lion and griffin. 6.16g, die axis 11h (S.2430; North 1893; Schneider I, 665). A few light marks and a little double struck in places, nonetheless displaying intricate detail to the struck devices, the light tone giving the surfaces a subtle lustrous glow, especially pleasing as such an original and honest coin, a superb piece. Good very fine and very rare.
