Henry VIII (1509-1547), gold Crown of the Double Rose, 1546-1547, Bristol [Castle], under treasurer, William Sharrington mint, third coinage (1544-1547), m.m. none/WS (monogram). Obv. Crowned Tudor Rose dividing crowned ‘h’ and ‘R’, all within inner beaded circle. Rev. Crowned coat-of-arms dividing crowned ‘h’ and ‘R’. 2.84g, die axis 8h (S.2310; North 1836). Some striking weakness to the periphery, otherwise the flan neat and round with bold central devices and some lustre, the light tone adding to already rich golden hues, an attractive coin with superb eye appeal, a pleasing survivor of this desirable provincial mint. A bold very fine to good very fine and rare, with a distinguished provenance.
