James I (1603-1625), silver Shilling, 1603-1604, London (Tower) mint, first coinage (1603-1604), m.m. thistle/thistle. Obv. Second bust, crowned facing right, beard appearing to merge with collar, mark of value in numerals behind head. Rev. Square topped shield of arms within beaded inner circle. 5.82g, die axis 4h (S.2646; North 2073). Small area of weakness in obverse legend and in corresponding part of reverse, otherwise a beautiful coin, nicely toned and centrally struck with a pleasing portrait. A bold good very fine and scarce in this condition.
