James I (1603-1625), silver Sixpence, 1603, London (Tower) mint, first coinage (1603-1604), m.m. thistle/thistle. Obv. First bust, crowned facing right, wearing armour, beard square cut, VI as mark of value behind head. Rev. Square-topped shield of arms, date above, within beaded inner circle. 3.09g, die axis 11h (S.2647; North 2074). An evenly struck and richly toned piece, on a full flan with all legends visible. Very fine.
