James II (1685-1688), gold Guinea, 1686, no stops on reverse (unlisted by Spink and Bull), edge milled diagonally. Obv. Second laureate bust facing left. Rev. Crowned cruciform shields, emblematic sceptres in angles, date split by English crown. 8.22g, die axis 6h (S.3402; EGC 324 var.). Once wiped with some resulting hairlines and brightness, a few contact marks, nonetheless pleasing with a bold, central strike and even wear, gold coinage desirable for this monarch, especially so with the present example variant being unlisted in either the Spink Standard Catalogue or Bull (English Gold Coinage), desirable thus. About very fine and scarce, the variety very rare.
