John (1199-1216), silver Penny, Canterbury mint, moneyer SAMVEL, Voided ‘Short Cross’ coinage, Class 5b2, m.m. cross pattée on reverse only. Obv. Crowned facing bust within inner circle, holding sceptre. Rev. Voided short cross, quatrefoil in each angle 1.43g, die axis 10h (S.1351; North 970). Flan edge slightly upturned on reverse and some areas of weakness, else with a well struck and pleasing portrait. Very fine.
